The Nepalese Community of Saskatoon (NECOS), with support from a SaskCulture grant, conducted a community workshop on March 9, 2024. The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including students, second-generation youths, womens, newcomers, as well as past presidents and current executives members of NECOS.
The workshop focused on identifying key issues within the Nepalese community, addressing needs, and suggesting future programs to improve NECOS’s objectives. Among the major suggestions were the creation of children and youth-based initiatives, such as a Nepali language school, winter excursions, and events to foster stronger connections between youth, elders, and other community members.
The ongoing NECOS sports programs received positive feedback, with participants emphasizing the importance of continuing such activities to strengthen community ties and promote mental well-being.
A notable recommendation from the workshop was the proposal to develop a framework for building a Nepalese “Pashupatinath” Temple in Saskatoon. This initiative would help preserve Nepalese heritage and culture while serving as a symbol of pride for the Nepalese community. It would also promote multiculturalism and foster relationships between people from various backgrounds.
